October 2006 (Medialink) -- Every 13 minutes one woman will die of breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society - a statistic that the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Siemens Medical Solutions are trying to change. Harnessing the power of the Internet, they've teamed up to encourage early detection and treatment through their new website: www.changethestatistic.com
Women can log on and "virtually promise" to have their annual mammogram. They can also send e-mail reminders to their friends and family to have regular breast cancer screenings as well. For each of the first 50,000 promises, Siemens Medical Solutions will donate $1 to the Komen Foundation.
Each virtual promise is assigned a number and will be recorded on the website as another individual committed to the fight against breast cancer. Visitors that make a promise on the website will have the chance to have their first name, photograph, and promise number featured on the Siemens Times Square SuperSign in New York City during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
