Wow, what a blast from the past -- the national debt was only $2.9 trillion then! It's $9.6 trillion now, and the gigantic financial bail out will probably add another trillion. The federal unfunded liabilities, which don't become debt until they have to be paid (at which point the government borrows the money) are at about $50 trillion.

The TOTAL DEBT of the USA is 59 TRILION dollars. That includes the national debt (almost 10 trilion), public debt, financiar and private sectors debts. 59 TRILION, people! All the mortgages combined, all the car loans, tractor loans, business loans, medcare loans, city loans, fed loans, EVERYTHING comes up to a TOTAL DEBT of 59 trilion dollars. The national debt, though tremendous, is not THAT high. If it was the nation would be bankrupt by now. Every day I'm waiting for a proposition to cross the house or senate floor for an investigation into just how much debt, or to put it positively "capital loans", is good for the Nation.

Now that's a wake up call.
