I guess it was a hint so that the relation of the old man to non-living things would be clearer... He had seent he chicken move as if it were alive- and it was the same with the cabbage- maybe he had seen lots of unliving things "living" the same way.

Excellent animation, but does anyone understand what the chicken's about? I mean, I understand that his wife is threatening him or expressing her anger that he's cheating on her with the cabbage, but what's the symbolism of the chicken being partially alive?
